The Project

ARCHE’s civil rights initiative will evolve in the following three phases:

Phase I
The current Web site (which you are now visiting) provides access to a searchable inventory of special collections at ARCHE member institution and affiliated libraries/archives containing materials relevant to the civil rights movement. This site also provides an overview of the story of Atlanta’s role in the movement, an interactive timeline of key events in Atlanta’s story, a bibliography of civil rights-related books and materials that are generally available, and links to other online resources.

Phase II
This will be a planning phase devoted to designing the content and architecture of a stand-alone educational Web site on Atlanta’s role in the civil rights movement, and to developing a grant proposal for its construction and launch. ARCHE currently is seeking sponsors to support this phase.

Phase III
This will be the implementation phase during which ARCHE will build and launch the comprehensive educational Web site planned in Phase II. Along with narratives and online exhibits regarding various aspects of Atlanta’s role in the movement, curricular material will be developed for use as a teaching tool in middle and high schools, and scholarly finding aids for library and archival collections will be improved to enhance their use by researchers and scholars.
