Mercer-Atlanta: Center of Baptist Scholarship
Mercer University has announced major steps toward its aspiration to become a worldwide center for Baptist scholarship. Last week the Baptist History and Heritage Society announced that it will relocate from Brentwood, Tenn., to the Atlanta campus in July. The move comes on the heels of the American Baptist Historical Society's September decision to consolidate its vast archives at Mercer-Atlanta from Valley Forge, Penn., and Rochester, N.Y. Mercer's Atlanta campus is home to the university's McAfee School of Theology. Carter, Clinton, Underwood (Photo: Mercer University / Billy Howard)

Former U.S. Presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton and Mercer University President William D. Underwood recently announced that "A Celebration of a New Baptist Covenant" will be held at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta in January 2008.

The Community Is the Classroom
When college students connect what they learn in the classroom to the real world, the students benefit – and the Atlanta region gains. Here are a few recent examples from countless collaborations across all ARCHE member institutions:

  • Mercer-Atlanta business students presented marketing research and solutions Monday to the Georgia Brain Train Group.
  • University of Georgia students taught merit badge classes to local Boy Scouts last weekend.
  • Clayton State's accounting club is helping low-income residents with tax returns.
  • SCAD-Atlanta students designed the Atlanta St. Patrick's Parade image and the ING Georgia Marathon poster.
  • Oglethorpe University students are learning about metro Atlanta's newest cities by volunteering with civic and government agencies.

“The opportunity to work outside the classroom with Atlanta’s many business, government and nonprofit organizations is one of the best reasons to go to college here,” says ARCHE President Michael A. Gerber. "Ties between campus and community offer advantages for the region as a whole."
