Comics and Cartoons
Creativity fueled SCAD-Atlanta students all night.The Savannah College of Art and Design-Atlanta buzzed with creativity – and caffeine – for 24-hour Comics Day in October. About 100 students (triple last year's number) spent the day and night creating, drawing, writing and animating a completed comic. The event was open to students in all SCAD majors this year and attracted animation, illustration, sequential arts, creative writing, advertising design and photography students for projects ranging from 30-second animation films to 24-page black-and-white comic books to 3-D sculpted maquettes. The author of a graphic novel adaptation of the 9/11 Commission report will lecture on "More than Superman: The History of Comics from Yellow Journalism to the 9/11 Report" Friday, Nov. 9 at the University of Georgia. More >

Bullies Beware
What if experts from a range of backgrounds pulled together to stop
bullying, prevent risky sexual behavior and improve the atmosphere in K-12
classrooms? That's the goal of Georgia State University's Center for
Research on School Safety, School Climate and Classroom Management
, which brings together professionals in law, psychology, education, nursing, public health, criminal justice, social work and policy. American International Group recently awarded the center a grant to study the effectiveness of bully prevention programs and strengthen the center's work in metro Atlanta.

Embryonic Stem Cells Thrive When Shaken

New research from the biomedical partnership at the Georgia Institute of Technology and Emory University suggests that embryonic stem cells may develop much better under similarly shaky conditions. Lehman and Spelman Target Women and Global Finance
Global investment bank Lehman Brothers committed $10 million, the largest gift in the firm's history, to establish the Lehman Brothers Center for Global Finance and Economic Development at Spelman College. Spelman will use the funds to develop an interdisciplinary curriculum, establish scholarships, and recruit new faculty. The Center aims to increase the pipeline of women and historically under-represented groups entering global finance careers. More > 

Kennesaw Unveils Arts Center  
New concert hall at Kennesaw StateKennesaw State University has opened a new performance center to excellent reviews. The Dr. Bobbie Bailey and Family Performance Center houses a 630-seat concert hall, a 3,600-square-foot music rehearsal hall and an 1,800-square-foot art gallery. Already, the center is hosting classes and rehearsals for students and faculty in a music department that has grown 70 percent since 2000. More >

  Collaborations  
 
Georgia State University's College of Law and the Georgia Institute of Technology's College of Architecture combine specialties to offer a joint degree program. A student earns both a master of city and regional planning degree and a law degree.

Tech and Georgia State also collaborate to offer a Ph.D in public policy.
