Carver, Georgia State Leave No Child Behind
A 100 percent graduation rate and 100 percent of the class accepted into college. That's the accomplishment of the first graduating class of Carver Early College High School, a collaboration between Atlanta Public Schools and Georgia State University. Most of the 79 grads will be the first in their families to head to college. Early College students take freshman college courses at Georgia State, learn study and time management skills, and broaden their experience with international trips.  More >

The More You Learn, the More You Earn
Last month's high school and college grads know their diplomas are the key to a better future, writes ARCHE President Michael Gerber in op-ed pieces around the state. But what's the return on their investment of and time and money and on the state's investment in their education? A new ARCHE report answers these questions for Georgia. "If we make the investment, there are clear and measurable returns for individuals and society," Gerber writes. "But if we fail to invest, we all pay the costs."

Planning for the Long Run 
Faculty tour Brenau's Fairburn campusBrenau University is taking steps toward expanding enrollment and becoming a doctoral degree-granting institution offering liberal arts, professional education and applied research. Brenau has created a bioscience center and is expanding resources for students seeking degrees online and around the state. In August, Brenau opens a new campus in Fairburn, south of Atlanta. The University of Georgia has embarked on a long-range planning exercise to envision what it might look like in the year 2020. The planning is in advance of seeking re-accreditation in 2010 from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.  More >

Higher Ed an Asset for Corporations, High-Tech Economy
Metro Atlanta gained the top spot in the southeast, and 12th overall, in a new Milken Institute report,  North America's High-Tech Economy: The Geography of Knowledge-based Industries, "We wouldn't be on the list without our universities," said Metro Atlanta Chamber President Sam Williams.

In announcements earlier this week, the Georgia Department of Economic Development and the Metro Atlanta Chamber cited the region's colleges and universities as a major asset in their efforts to recruit Fortune 500 company NCR to move to Duluth.

Photos of ARCHE-member campuses at the Metro ChamberTo highlight the region's colleges and universities as one of the Atlanta's chief economic development assets, the Metro Atlanta Chamber has decked a hallway in its offices with photos of ARCHE-member campuses. At the Chamber's annual meeting, President Sam Williams called Atlanta's higher ed strength one of five core assets, along with the airport and the region's reputation as a "hip" young city. "No city can go out and start 45 universities to compete with us," he said.
