Tech + Emory = a Sum Greater Than Its Parts
Emory and Georgia Tech yesterday began a celebration of their 10-year partnership in biomedical engineering. The Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech and Emory has become a national model for innovative collaboration between public and private universities and between schools of medicine and engineering. It ranked second among departments of biomedical engineering in last year's U.S. News & World Report . Together the institutions are conducting groundbreaking research, training students and residents, and laying groundwork for more partnerships.
Stand Up for Human Rights
Five alums of Spelman and Morehouse colleges who were part of the student civil rights movement told a group of current students last week that it's time for them to stand up for human rights. Morehouse graduates Lonnie C. King, Johnny Parham and Charles A. Black and Spelman grads Gwendolyn Middlebrooks and Brenda Cole spoke about their experiences in Atlanta during the 1960s.
Kennesaw State: Growing to Meet Demand
Kennesaw State University President Dan Papp said in his State of the University address last week that he hopes for increased funding to meet growing demand at the university. UGA: Get Moving!
University of Georgia cooperative extension agents are encouraging people in counties across the state to increase their physical activity by logging real miles into a Web site. The site leads them on a virtual walk around the state with interesting facts about Georgia. More >
Also in recent days, UGA research showing that regular, low-intensity workouts boost energy and decrease fatigue generated worldwide media coverage ranging from Reuters to the Hindu to Health Jockey.com .
And UGA's health and physical education program for teachers was one of fewer than two dozen in the country to receive national recognition for its graduates' capabilities.
West Georgia Works Toward Water Solutions
Strategic water management and severe drought were buzzwords at the second annual University of West Georgia Water Resources Conference. Dozens of government officials, residents and business owners – along with West Georgia students, faculty and staff – discussed interstate water cooperation, the future supply of water, reservoirs, and monitoring water quality in streams, rivers and wells. Even More Students Will Live Downtown
Georgia State University broke ground last week on two new student housing developments that will bring the university closer to its goal of having 20 percent of students living on campus by 2015. A hall for 350 freshmen and townhouses for 145 members of Greek organizations are expected to be complete by fall 2009 at the corner of Edgewood and Piedmont avenues downtown. More >
Bright Future at SCAD-Atlanta
Lighting, furniture, art, tableware, even chess sets will be on display as the Savannah College of Art and Design-Atlanta hosts "Karim Rashid: From 15 Minutes into the Future." Rashid will lecture at the Woodruff Arts Center's Rich Auditorium April 3. Both events are free and open to the public.
