Gaming in the Classroom at SCAD-Atlanta, SPSU
SCAD-Atlanta student at the game developers conference Behind-the-scenes insight from top computer game professionals was on the agenda when the Savannah College of Art and Design-Atlanta hosted the Game Developers eXchange conference . More than 350 game developers, educators and students learned about the workings of the industry, alternative gaming and emerging game concepts. SCAD-Atlanta offers both graduate and undergraduate degrees in interactive design and game development.

Southern Polytechnic State University this summer adds Xbox 360 to the classroom with the launch of a game design lab that lays the groundwork for an undergraduate degree in the subject. SPSU hopes the lab will attract more computer science majors. More >

Charting Mercer's Future for the Decade Ahead

Mercer's Atlanta campus Mercer University trustees have charted a 10-year growth plan to expand endowment, enrollment and academic programs across the state. Highlights include growing from 7,300 to 8,500 students statewide; increasing endowment from $200 million to $1 billion; building new facilities in Atlanta, Macon and Savannah; adding more faculty to lower the student-faculty ratio; increasing faculty compensation; and adding new degree programs. In addition, the vision statement and strategic plan call for Mercer to redefine what it means to be a faith-based university in the Baptist tradition.

Digital Civil Rights Library Brings Learning Online
From the WSB News archive, Walter J. Brown Media Archives and Peabody Awards Collection, University of Georgia A partnership led by the University of Georgia and GALILEO has launched the nation's most comprehensive Web portal for educational content on the civil rights movement. The Civil Rights Digital Library includes a news video archive of events from the desegregation of UGA and Georgia Tech to Martin Luther King Jr.'s reaction to President Kennedy's assassination. The site also brings together metadata on oral histories, letters, diaries, FBI files and photographs from more than 75 libraries and allied organizations across the nation. A section helps teachers use the content in the classroom, with stories from nine Georgia cities, discussion questions and lesson plans. ARCHE, with its Atlanta in the Civil Rights Movement site, is one of many initial partners in the project.

Tech Scientists Discover New Ocean Current
North Pacific Gyre Oscillation Scientists at the Georgia Institute of Technology have discovered a new climate pattern called the North Pacific Gyre Oscillation. It explains, for the first time, changes in the water that help commercial fishers understand fluctuations in the fish supply. As the temperature of the Earth is warming, large fluctuations in these factors could help climatologists predict how the oceans will respond in a warmer world. More >

An Emory University scientist is studying a potential treatment for two of the deadliest forms of brain tumors in children: glioma and medulloblastom. More >

For children whose parents have been diagnosed with cancer, Emory's Winship Cancer Institute is offering a support program to help kids age 6 to 11 deal with their sadness, fear, anxiety or anger. More >

Agnes Scott's new chapel Design Merges Gothic with Organic
Brick and contemporary gothic design merge with organic architecture in Agnes Scott 's new chapel. The Julia Thompson Smith Chapel , the first freestanding chapel in the college's 119-year history, was dedicated last week in a multifaith blessing ceremony .
