Public College Funding Declines
Read the report >At Georgia's four-year public colleges and universities, revenue from state funding and tuition has lost ground to enrollment growth and inflation. A report from the Southern Regional Education Board shows that, from fiscal year 2001 to 2007, inflation-adjusted funding in Georgia fell $2,837 per full-time-equivalent student. That's a drop of 19 percent, nearly 10 times larger than the decrease in all other SREB states. More from SREB's "Challenge to Lead" progress report >

Last month, the University System of Georgia Board of Regents, following instructions from the Governor's Office of Planning and Budget, approved plans to cut requested FY 2010 as well as previously appropriated FY 2009 budgets by 6 percent, 8 percent or 10 percent if necessary due to declining state tax revenues. Tech Prof Wins Nation's Highest Science Honor
Mostafa El-Sayed, Georgia Institute of TechnologyMostafa El-Sayed of Georgia Tech was awarded the 2007 Medal of Science for "contributions to our understanding of the electronic and optical properties of nano-materials and to their applications in nano-catalysis and nano-medicine, for his humanitarian efforts of exchange among countries and for his role in developing the scientific leadership of tomorrow." El-Sayed is working on gold nanorods that can bind to cancer cells, making them easy to target with a laser without harming the skin. He will receive the medal at a White House ceremony. More >

Art Collection Donated to Morehouse
Morehouse President Robert Franklin with Purvis Young paintingsMorehouse College last week accepted the largest collection of art ever given to the college. Valued at $1 million, the 109 paintings by south Florida artist Purvis Young reflect the social impact of poverty, drugs, crime and displacement, primarily in Young's Miami neighborhood. Morehouse President Robert Franklin related the collection's content to the college's goal of teaching students to become agents of social change. More >

Kennesaw State University and WellStar Health System last week announced efforts to recruit more KSU nurses to WellStar, provide adjunct faculty from WellStar nursing staff, retain KSU nursing faculty and offer student scholarships. WellStar and Kennesaw State have collaborated since the 1980s. The university's WellStar School of Nursing and the WellStar College of Health & Human Services were named in 2003. More >
Kennesaw State is also partnering with Georgia Highlands College in Rome to offer education and business degrees in Paulding County. More >
 


University of West Georgia is the first public university and only the fourth nationwide designated by Kawai piano as an Elite Performing Instrument Collection (EPIC) partner. This summer, 29 new Kawai instruments five of them highly prized Shigeru Kawai grand pianos arrived on campus thanks to the program, which allows universities to buy the instruments at sponsored cost.
